Your Drinking Water

Poor quality water can be obvious from sight, odour or flavour. So, is it true to say that if your water looks, smells, and tastes fine – it is? Unfortunately, not necessarily.

Microbial and organic contaminants cannot always be detected by human senses. You might go years before realizing a problem exists. You never become suspicious until people in the locality or household start to get sick. In addition to the possible presence of bacteria, viruses and cysts, water supplies close to agricultural areas may contain harmful organic material from pesticide or fertilizers. Water containing these chemicals may increase cancer risk and can impair kidney, eye and liver functions as well as causing nausea.

How can your drinking water become contaminated?

Your drinking water can be contaminated at both the source from the water company at the meter point or on your premises due to corroded pipework and stagnant water in tanks.

Water supplied from piped mains or by tankers can be suspect in certain remote settings with long draw offs that may not have been used for some time. In this case, the disinfection applied by the water company may have depleted over time leading to the growth of microorganisms. Some viruses and bacteria can even resist disinfection by shrouding themselves in protective sacs known as cysts .

Even mains water can be compromised. Problems arise with water plant malfunction in the dosing of chemicals or unwanted infiltration through defective infrastructure such as leaking or burst pipes.

Similarly, rainwater is not as pure and wholesome as is commonly believed. Rainwater collects chemicals on its path through the air to your roof. Thereafter, roof contaminates are often introduced e.g. rat droppings, faecal matter from birds, as well as other miscellaneous organic and inorganic material.

Once compromised, if the mains, tanked or rainwater is stored in a cistern, the bugs can multiply and can create viable cultures that can flourish in biofilm. This issue is particularly prevalent in warmer climates which assist the quick reproduction of bacteria – a particularly notable example is Legionella.
